Para la creación de imágenes, The Rift, Rhiannon Adam se vale de procesos tanto tradicionales como experimentales con el fin de ampliar la narrativa sobre el desarrollo de la fracturación hidráulica (extracción de gas de lutita) en el Reino Unido. El proyecto se centra en el lado humano, en los rostros y los lugares que rodean el primer punto activo de hidrofracturación de Inglaterra.
En julio de 2018, una empresa de gas de lutita llamada Cuadrilla obtuvo el permiso del Gobierno británico para empezar a perforar un pozo en Preston New Road (Lancashire), el primer punto activo de fracturación hidráulica del Reino Unido desde que se levantó la moratoria de esta práctica. La primera fractura tuvo lugar en octubre de 2018 y desde entonces se han registrado más de sesenta temblores. La situación de la zona, que años atrás gozaba de una pujante actividad turística, es apurada y sus tasas de desempleo y de pobreza infantil están por encima de la media. Algunas personas agradecen la inyección de liquidez de la industria, pero otras creen que la fracturación hidráulica terminará de rematarlos.
Rhiannon Adam (Cork, Irlanda, 1985) ha recibido multitud de premios. Entre los últimos figuran el Photo IS:RAEL Award for Excellence in Photography (2020), el PHMuseum Mobile Photo of the Year 2020 y el Magenta Foundation Flash Forward Winner (2019). También fue seleccionada para el PhotoLucida Critical Mass Top 50 (2019).
