Malaga (Spain), 1881 – Moulins (France), 1973. He is the most well known artist of Spanish origin. Son of the artist José Ruiz Blasco, in 1895 he moved to Barcelona, where he met artists and literati, including painters such as Ramón Casas and Santiago Rusiñol. In 1904 he moved to Paris and joined the art circles in that city. His first great recognition was to arrive with Les demoiselles d’Avignon in which numerous influences and styles converge and which gave rise to cubism, by revising the way of representing volume in painting. Along with Braque he developed this style that was to evolve through different stages during the early 20th century. In the 1930s, along with Julio González, he became interested in sculpture. The outbreak of the Spanish Civil War compelled him to produce one of his most famous works: Guernica. He left Paris in the mid 40s to settle in Antibes, where he added pottery to his usual media. In the 1950s he produced numerous series paying homage to classic masterpieces of painting, reinterpreting them. In 1961, the already legendary Pablo Picasso retired to the Vouvenargues castle, where he was to live for the rest of his life.
