EXIT Publications presents Perímetro from Gerardo Custance (Madrid, 1976), the last volume of his Proyectos collection, aimed at making unknown Spanish photographers visible.
Landscapes from the outskirts of Madrid, previously marked out by the photographer using a very specific method, are the object of study of these images by Gerardo Custance. His vision is similar to that of a cartographer according to Rosa Olivares, the author of the essay that contextualizes the Madrilenian photographer’s project. In fact, using the same method as a specialist in map drawing, Custance first marks out the place, the area of study, the landscape to be represented. However, and as often occurs with artistic photography, its framing provides something more: awareness of the loss and transformation of the natural spaces in our most immediate environment, spaces that have literally been devoured due to the non-stop development of modern cities. A change that is in no way romantic or grand but that through the eyes of the artist can become something more than a mere report of the ongoing destruction of our culture.
According to Rosa Olivares “Custance tells a sad story through beautiful pictures, with a sense of humour and irony but above all with the humanity of a young perspective that narrates this transformation without sensationalism but calmness. Salvaging what remains, without drama, though perhaps some sadness”.
With the images of Perímetro we are confronted with the consequences of development and supposed human progress. A tireless advance that appears unstoppable and in which we all, without exception, participate.
