EXIT #13 Sense of humor proposes to study the representation of humor in photography and contemporary art in all of its guises, from the hilarious to the absurd, from the ironic to the mocking.
In this editorial, Rosa Olivares reflects on the difficulty of finding images and texts capable of tapping into the humorous expectations of everyone; what makes one person smile may seem crude or inappropriate to another. That is why this issue presents a wide range of images that bring together the diverse ways in which artists have approached this subject.
The central text from Ana María Vigara, You can take everything from me, except my fear...! Humor and its meaning(s) in the communicative act, aims to get to the bottom of what it means to have a sense of humor and what it depends on (is it social? perhaps cultural?); an exclusively human and individual sense which to a large degree conditions our way of acting and reacting to the world.
This issue also includes the text A cynical smile by José María Parreño, together with an analysis by Rosa Olivares and Luis Francisco Pérez of the work of Teun Hocks and Erwin Wurm, two of the central artists this edition.
Other artists featured in this issue include Philippe Ramette, William Wegman, Pedro G. Romero, Plonk & Replonk, Miguel Calderón, Philippe Ramette, Isaac Montoya, Marcos López, Liliana Porter, Wim Delvoye, Yoshua Okon, Tibor Gyenis, Karen Knorr, Peter Land, Urs Lüthi, Martin Parr, Fichli & Weiss, Olaf Breuning and Carles Congost.
