EXIT #28 - Flowers

EXIT #28 analyzes the representation of flowers in photography and video from nineteenth century pictorialism to the present day.

In her editorial Say it with FlowersRosa Olivares, editor and publisher of EXIT, considers the association of flowers with beauty, and the loss of the former language of flowers, in addition to analyzing why they are such photographic objects.Gill Saunders, curator at the Victoria & Albert Museum, London, outlines in her article From Specimens to Sex Symbolsthe way in which flowers have been used by photographers over the past two-hundred years, surveying the evolution of their symbolism. In Immortal Flowers? Peter Bernhardt, Professor of Botany at Saint Louis University, Missouri, U.S.A., offers an account of the natural history of flowers since their birth 125 million years ago, and describes their scientific specificities in non-technical language. The surrealist Georges Bataille's classic text about the language of flowers brings the issue to a close.

There are also portfolios by Ori GershtPeter HutchinsonMargriet Smulders and Marie-Jo Lafontaine, with texts written by the photographers themselves, and pictures by another forty artists, ranging from the color experiments of Edward Steichen and Imogen Cunningham to Jennifer Steinkamp's digital animations and the conceptual projects of Hans Peter Feldmann and John Baldessari, and the photo-collages of Stephen Gill and Paloma Navares.

As always, on the last pages one can find the index of artists, comprising the basic biographical references of all the artists included in the magazine.
