EXIT #36 - Architecture I. The Professional View

EXIT #36 enters the world of professional architecture photography, with the aim of providing visibility to those artists who do not generally appear in these pages devoted to the world of contemporary art, but to which they nonetheless belong.

We focus on photographers specialised in architecture, whose work (generally done on commission from architects, construction companies or specialised publications) forms an essential means of showcasing contemporary architecture. Artists on assignment, whose oeuvre represents one of the most interesting aspects of professional photography.

The issue begins with the essay, The Vision Project, by contemporary architecture critics and curators Fredy Massad and Alicia Guerrero Yeste, in which they outline the history of the genre and reflect on the changing role of architectural photography as a tool for comprehension and communication of its subject, as well as its potential use in the development of the architectural project in this information age.

Photography and the Language of Architecture, written in 1963 by pioneer Ezra Stoller, one of the greatest and most influential photographers the Modernist era, explores the threefold relationship between the represented subject, the intermediary photographic medium and the viewer.

The issue's main section comprises 17 portfolios of the work of the most acclaimed professionals in the field. Through their images and their words they state what they consider to be the essential characteristics of a successful architecture photograph. They reveal why they chose architecture as a subject, their particular relationship to it and to architects, and reflect on the importance of photography to contemporary architecture. The images they present are the best expression of their theories.
