The images of these new documentary photographers differ in the dimensions and purpose from press photography and even those conceived for publication in book form, and they are transformed into museum pieces, galleries and our own homes. Photographers who have taken on the work of documenting the world around them are transforming, becoming increasingly more like artists and less like conveyors of an indisputable objective reality because of the rapid evolution of the photographic language that connects more and more with other means of knowledge and practice that range from semiology to architecture, literature, philosophy and history.
The 16 portfolios in this issue provide examples of the different perspectives that portray our world, a world that is more complex and serious than the TV news broadcasts show us. These new forms of documenting are accompanied by texts written by the artists themselves, explaining how they see this new change in documentary photography, their approach to the individual, a more human story. Peter Bialobrzeski, Lukas Einsele, Anna Fox, Alexander Gronsky, Sunil Gupta, Pieter Hugo, Francesco Jodice, Joachim Koester, Anastasia Khoroshilova, Santu Mofokeng, Ana Teresa Ortega, Dana Popa, Lise Sarfati, Bruno Serralongue, Ahlam Shibli and Begoña Zubero are some of the examples of this new documentary photography, this new derivation of photography, who explain to us through their images and words how to approach their work as archive, document and testimony of the reality we live. Always from a more intimate perspective, and normally in a more creative, more clearly subjective, way, not lacking in beauty, which sometimes has the attraction of the abyss.
