EXIT #72 - Masculinity

EXIT 72 MASCULINITY

We live in a moment in which masculinity faces new questions and a deep reflection on what it means to be a man. Masculinity is a construction, a technology of gender, a polarity and an open question. In this issue we want to explore the spaces and conditions of masculinity based on concepts such as power, visibility, look, desire or education. Featuring texts by two fundamental authors in this field, bell hooks and Abigail Solomon-Godeau, we go through rites of passage, genre choreography, masculinity as a disguise, as a non-chosen inheritance and as an option.

Through different artist dossiers we will see Sam Taylor-Johnson's work with iconic actors crying, the codification of dance according to Valérie Belin, the gender vestiges in the arcihtecture with Cabello / Carceller, the construction of masculinity in sport with Alix Lambert or Nicolai Howalt, the secret file of Juan Carlos Martínez or the different types of canon through Barbara Hammer, Juanjo Herrera or Catherine Opie. Masculinity in singular and also in plural, as body writing and as a reflected image.
