What is power? Who exercises it? How is it represented? In what places is power expressed? These are some of the questions raised in the latest edition of EXIT. From Jeremy Bentham's Panopticon, a building design concept and paranoia inducing machine, effective in exercising control (as you do not know if you are being watched) applied to the architecture of prisons, schools and hospitals, to the meeting tables of big corporations where decisions are made that affect not just the business but everyone, EXIT takes a look at the photographic projects of fifteen artists on the theme, Spaces of power.

Churches, palaces, museums, prisons, courts, factories, offices, meeting rooms, data centres, are all spaces analysed by the participating photographers, to show the strategies that are and have been employed by those in power. This edition reveals the influence of power exerted through architecture, including places where it is no longer exercised but still stand as testimony to the way architecture was used to represent this end, and new spaces belonging to a globalised society in which everyone watches and is watched, where privacy and individuality seem an illusion.
