EXIT #56 As time goes by · Special issue 15th Anniversary
EXIT, the magazine on image and culture that was born at the turn of the 20th to 21scenturies, the publication that started with a small leap into the future, arriving with the year that kicked off the century, celebrates its 15th anniversary with this issue. Our first issue was devoted to the theme of the mirror, the essence of photography, while at the same time its fiercest opponent. We produced a beautifully crafted volume in stark blacks and luminous greys, an adolescent photographic poem, as intense and incomplete as any life worth living. We dedicate this issue number 56, which coincides with our 15th anniversary, to the passage of time. Today we offer you a blank diary, a guide for a journey that will last an entire year. A diary that can be a biography, yet also a blank page, ready to be filled any day of any year, on any journey, of any life.
EXIT is something more than an art magazine, than a photography magazine. It is a magazine in which the images connect us to time, to society, to other people. Each issue is a journey and the entire collection an authentic and fascinating journey through time. Because 15 years are not just 15 years, 5,475 days, 131,400 hours, 7,884,000 minutes, but everything that happened during that abstract time that we never felt were real.
In this EXIT that concludes a whole epoch we have selected some of the photographs, some of the artists who try to capture the passage of time, not just a specific moment, not even a temporal fragment, but that subtle change, that transformation that the passage of time leaves on what it touches. Portraits of what left while it was leaving. That is the authentic magic of photography. It was not a matter of capturing the precise moment and eternalizing it. It was not a matter of questioning reality, the truth through lies and artificiality. It was simply a matter of portraying time itself, of making the precise and changing portrait of the flow of time, of photographing the movement of life. That is our voyage through time, a voyage that we all take. The grand voyage.
